How to Prep Your Home for a Cleaner's First Visit

The Verdant Team March 5, 2026 4 min read

A few small things you can do the night before that make a huge difference in your first clean.

You're paying for time, so the more time your cleaner spends actually cleaning (instead of moving toys or hunting for a vacuum outlet), the better the result. Here's how to set them up.

The night before

  • Pick up clutter from floors and surfaces — toys, laundry, mail, dishes.
  • Run the dishwasher so the sink is empty.
  • Strip beds if you'd like linens changed (and leave fresh sets out).
  • Move anything fragile or valuable out of the way.
  • Secure pets in a closed room or take them with you.

Day of

  • Leave a note about anything specific you want focused on.
  • Let them know about quirks — sticky locks, finicky vacuum cords, the cabinet that doesn't close.
  • If you're not home, leave instructions for parking and entry.

What you don't need to do

You don't need to pre-clean. Truly. Cleaners would rather walk into a real-life home than a pre-staged one — it helps us see what actually needs attention.
